A Salute to Our Veterans: Honoring Great River Health's Heroes

As Veterans Day approaches, join us in expressing gratitude and celebrating the brave men and women who have served our country.

Did you know that Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day, commemorating the end of World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918?

While Veterans Day always falls on November 11th, you don't have to wait to show your appreciation. Whenever you have the chance, a simple thank you, kind deed, or charitable contribution to a veteran organization can have a lasting impact.

“A simple, 'Thank you for your service’ is perfectly fine. I believe this is what most veterans want,” said Andrew Oldfield, a chaplain at Great River Health and Army National Guard veteran of nine years.

Great River Health is proud to employ veterans who have made significant contributions in their military careers, our community, and our organization. Today, we are excited to highlight two specifically:

Nathaniel York, currently a PC specialist in Information Technology at Great River Health has a distinguished 21-year career in the U.S. Army, serving as a First Sergeant.

Sergeant York's extensive military experience includes a Bronze Star Medal along with more than 25 awards, decorations, and assignments. York’s deployments include Bosnia, Kosovo (twice), and Sarajevo. He also served four combat tours in Iraq. The leadership, discipline, and resilience developed during his military career continue to guide him today. He explained, “The structure and rigor of the Army trained me to work under pressure, solve problems effectively, and stay adaptable in changing environments. As a Signal Support Systems Specialist, I developed technical skills that I continue to use, especially in the technology and communication fields. My service also instilled a sense of purpose, and my role as a leader has extended beyond the military—motivating me to give back and support my community.”

Some of York's countless awards included: Volunteer of the 3rd Quarter, 2014 Fort Riley Volunteer of the Year, 2015 Fort Riley Volunteer of the Year, 2015 Fort Riley Soldier of the Year. It’s evident that his military career continues to shape his life as he selflessly serves others. Today, he serves Burlington’s local veterans as the 2024 Veterans Tech Support Class leader in the Self Reliance Group.

York is working on establishing a partnership between VFW Post 10102 and The Self Reliance Group. He has also contributed materially to developing and implementing the Veteran Tech Support classes by providing a large flat-screen TV, which enhances the learning experience for class attendees. In recognition of his dedication, the Self Reliance Board awarded him “Volunteer of the Year” in October 2024.

Orie 'Bob' Potter, PA-C, also spent 21 years in the U.S. Army, serving as a medic and physician assistant in training.

During his time in the Army, he fulfilled multiple deployments around the globe. Captain Potter's dedication to his duty was exemplified during his deployment to Camp Pelham, Korea. He was on call 24/7 to provide medical care to 2,500 active-duty soldiers. He also served as a flight surgeon and nuclear surety officer of the western corridor. In addition to medical care, he provided training for medics and future physician assistants in the Army.

Recently Captain Potter received The Order of Military Medical Merit which is a prestigious award given to only a select few within the Army Medical Department. An extensive nomination process is followed by selections made by a board of senior leadership to receive membership into the Order.

The Order recognizes individuals who demonstrate high integrity and moral character, are in the top 10% of their Corps and field, have excelled professionally in the Army Medical Department (AMEDD) for at least 15 years, contributed selflessly, and enhanced Army Medicine.

“This recognition is very special to me. It is humbling to be nominated and selected by my peers for this top military medical honor. I am proud to be part of an elite group of medical personnel who have received this award,” said Captain Bob Potter.

After retiring from the Army, Captain Potter completed the Master of Physician Assistant Studies program at the University of Nebraska. He has been part of the medical team at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center for over ten years.

These are just two of many veterans we are proud to employ and support. Join us in celebrating and thanking them, and all veterans, for their service.

Great River Health has supported veterans through the years with Foundation donations to organizations like Military Support Groups of America which provides crucial support to military families, and Iowa 2x4's for Hope, dedicated to building stable and dignified living environments for at-risk veterans in Fort Madison.
