About the Foundation

The Great River Health Foundation was established in 1995 as the Fort Madison Community Hospital Foundation. For more than a quarter-century, it has been a thriving philanthropic organization.

  • In 2018, Great River Medical Center in West Burlington and Fort Madison Community Hospital became partners under Great River Health, a health system serving the southeast Iowa region.
  • In 2021, the hospitals became Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center, one hospital with two campuses.
  • The same year, the Fort Madison Community Hospital Foundation changed its name to Great River Health Foundation to align with the health system’s regional perspective.
  • The Foundation operates as a 501(c)3 charitable organization governed by a 17-member independent board of directors.

Areas of Commitment

Healthcare
The Foundation invests in capital items that enhance patient and family experiences. From exploring beverage stations to furniture purchases, the Great River Health Foundation helps strengthen healthcare on our campuses.

Education

  • The first major gift of this strategy was a pledge of up to $10 million to Southeastern Community College to significantly expand its nursing program and increase the number of healthcare workers for generations.
  • Through the Foundation, the Kathleen Canella Family Scholarship and Tracey Howe Scholarship provided a combined $7,000 to eight students in 2022. The awards will be used to fund education for health careers.

Workforce
Great River Health is committed to recruiting, training, and retaining the very best in healthcare talent. As part of our commitment to employees, the Foundation is investing $1.7 million into establishing a childcare facility on the Fort Madison campus. This investment will provide a practical solution with peace of mind to our employees with children.

Livable communities
Besides providing high-quality health care, our health system serves southeast Iowa in other ways. The Foundation is engaged in a variety of community initiatives and is considered a thought leader on economic and community development strategies.
